Mardin Historic Site Preservation

Being one of the ancient cities of Anatolia, Mardin was nominated as the pre-world heritage site by UNESCO. Local government, seeking the improvement of urban life and architectural heritage, applied to the University to develop the project. A team of architectural and urban planning students, including myself, developed a preservation plan outlining alternatives for Mardin. Using GIS we have formulated a spatially referenced database, which included building information for further preservation.
Historically developed Mardin has got its own character. Terraced houses and flat roofs are forming a character of the city. In the city, diverse groups practising their religion in peace and dignity. Mardin has also been affected by rapid urbanization. Many 7-8 story buildings erected in the city without any concerns to the historical fabric. This restoration project aims to regenerate the old city and revitalize the settlement.
